The opening weekend of Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie” brought in a staggering $155 million domestically, making it the greatest opening weekend of 2023 and the biggest debut for a female filmmaker.

The simultaneous release of “Barbie” and Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer,” known as “Barbenheimer,” has gained popular attention and may help the faltering film industry.

With a Sunday total of $302 million, Barbenheimer had the fourth-highest industry weekend ever in North America. Analysts predict that when final data are released on Monday, it will increase much higher.

The film had the highest domestic opening for a female director. The movie “Wonder Woman” from 2017, which was directed by Patty Jenkins and earned roughly $38 million domestically on opening day, serves as the most direct parallel.
