Alef Aeronautics is positioning itself as the latest company on the verge of delivering a flying car, with its Model A after a decade of development. The company claims to have 3,200 pre-orders for the vehicle.
A 53-second video shows a car-shaped object lifting off vertically, much like a helicopter, and flying over a GMC Yukon XL before landing on what might be a green tarpaulin. The sound is similar to a drone taking off, suggesting that’s how the vehicle achieves flight. A second clip shows a similar vehicle flying over a Lexus RX on a residential street, but it cuts off before landing. Alef estimates the Model A has a 200-mile driving range and a 100-mile flying range.
The all-electric flying car is street-legal and can be driven on public roads. Its mesh body design and gimbal-based cabin are shown in photos, though the vehicle’s open doors aren’t visible in the videos. Classified as a Low-Speed Vehicle (LSV), the Model A can be driven on roads with speed limits of 35 mph or lower in most U.S. states and is legal on roads in British Columbia, Quebec, and Ontario.
