After several years of postponement, Ratu Sukuna Park is finally set to reopen on August 19. Tevita Boseiwaqa, acting CEO and chairperson of the Suva City Council, addressed public concerns in a recent interview, explaining the factors contributing to the prolonged closure. Among these was the decision to modify the park’s design, including removing a planned café, which reduced project costs from $13 million to $7 million.
The park will now feature enhanced infrastructure, including larger podiums, benches, charging ports, and lighting, along with a new fence for improved security. Boseiwaqa emphasized the importance of public responsibility in maintaining the park, urging both visitors and council staff to collaborate in preserving the space.
Although the park will officially open on August 19, it will not be used for the upcoming Hibiscus Festival, scheduled from August 31 to September 7 at the Suva Foreshore. Festival Chairman Opetaia Ravai shared this update following the signing of a three-year sponsorship agreement between the Suva City Council and Vodafone Fiji. He noted that the festival aims to promote diversity and togetherness among the people of Fiji.
Ravai also clarified that the park’s reopening was delayed to accommodate the chief guest’s schedule. He highlighted that the main festival events will take place at the foreshore, while sports activities are set for Albert Park. Despite not hosting festival activities, Ratu Sukuna Park will remain open for families during the event.
Ratu Sukuna Park is reopening, and you’re welcome to celebrate! Save the date for August 19 and join the Suva City Council for a lively evening at the scenic Sukuna Park from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Bring your friends, and family, and remember to pack your mat!
