A senior citizen from Ecuador who awoke in a casket at her own wake is being treated at the same public hospital that pronounced her dead two days prior, according to her son.
Bella Montoya, 76, is shown in a video released on Twitter breathing heavily in her open casket with the help of two men.
After the five-hour wake, her son Gilbert Balbern claimed that “she was hitting the box” with her left hand.
After the public hospital in the coastal town of Babahoyo, Martin Icaza, confirmed Montoya dead on Friday, Balbern was forced to arrange for the donation of a coffin for the struggling family.
According to a statement released on Sunday by Ecuador’s Health Ministry, Montoya was admitted to the hospital with a suspected stroke “and went into cardiorespiratory arrest without responding to resuscitation manoeuvres, so the doctor on duty confirmed her death.”
The ministry declared that a committee had been formed to look into the occurrence and that Montoya’s treatment would be under its supervision.
