Although there have long been rumours about a fifth Shrek film, it appears that the follow-up will finally materialize when an NBCUniversal employee purportedly revealed inadvertently that Shrek 5 will hit theatres in 2025. The employee in issue is said to have posted the Shrek 5 release date on their LinkedIn page before swiftly removing it. Regretfully, the receipts are always saved on the internet.

As previous inadvertent internet leaks have shown, we don’t currently know anything more about this, but we can probably assume that the company intends to bring Shrek back to theatres in 2025.

This probable release window follows Illumination CEO Chris Meledandri’s April announcement regarding the Shrek follow-up. In an interview with Variety magazine at the time, Meledandri stated that they planned to tackle Shrek 5 similarly to how they approached the wildly popular The Super Mario Bros. Movie, with the goal of reuniting the original cast, which included Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, and Cameron Diaz.
