A lot can happen in 12 months. Today the race that stops a nation had us all jumping for joy as we cheered on bets but there can only be one winner.

Last year, having missed out on James McDonald riding Verry Elleegant at the Melbourne Cup, Mark Zahra was drinking his sorrows away in Byron Bay.

Twelve months later Zahra called it “redemption” as he pulled off an upset by riding Gold Trip to the 2022 Melbourne Cup as the French horse claimed its second career victory.

Gold Trip pulled an impressive win to claim the Melbourne Cup winner after being the runner-up at the Caulfield Cup,

Mark Zahra described the victory as unbelievable.

“I feel like crying. It’s unbelievable,”

He added,

“That last 100 I was just thinking, ‘just piss off, no one come near me!’ ….“It’s just elation when I crossed the line.”

Gold Trip has won AUD$4.4 million.
