Team Fiji athletes and officials were warmly welcomed by the Fijian community in Paris, who hosted a dinner and presented a traditional sevusevu in their honour last night.

Linda Acker, a long-time resident of Paris for the past 23 years, expressed the strong bonds within the Fijian community in the city. She coordinated the event alongside former Flying Fijians winger Fero Lasagavibau and former All Blacks winger Joe Rokocoko.

Acker, visibly moved, shared that despite the years spent abroad, Fiji remains deeply rooted in their hearts.

Joe Rokocoko noted that the gathering was an opportunity for the Fijian community to express their gratitude to the Olympians for their dedication and sacrifices in representing Fiji on the world stage. He emphasized that these athletes symbolize the pride of all Fijians, not just in Fiji but globally.

Team Fiji Chef de Mission, Sale Sorovaki, thanked the Fijian community for their hospitality. He also cherished the opportunity to reconnect with his former teammate, Fero, and his family.

In the 2024 Paris Olympics, the United States topped the medal tally with 40 gold, 44 silver, and 42 bronze. China followed with 40 gold, 27 silver, and 24 bronze, while Japan secured third place with 20 gold, 12 silver, and 13 bronze. Fiji concluded their participation in 74th place, earning a silver medal in the Men’s 7s competition. Swimmer David Young and Taekwondo athlete Venice Traill proudly carried Fiji’s flag during the Closing Ceremony.

The evening was a memorable one, as the athletes enjoyed traditional Fijian food and the company of fellow Fijians in Paris. Host Linda Acker expressed her honour in welcoming the young Fijian Olympians to her home. Former All Black Joe Rokocoko added that the gathering was a heartfelt gesture of thanks to a remarkable group of young athletes who now carry the title of Fijian Olympians.
