In a historic first, Fiji’s women’s futsal team, is preparing to make their mark on the international stage as they represent the nation at the inaugural OFC Futsal Women’s Nations Cup 2024.
I know! I know! You probably didn’t know or hear about Fiji having a Futsal team or rather, hear about women in Fiji playing Futsal, right?? Well, the tournament, which will be hosted by the Solomon Islands from August 17-25, marks a significant milestone for women’s futsal in Fiji. This tournament not only showcases the growing popularity of the sport among women but also highlights the increasing opportunities for female athletes in the Pacific region. Fiji is among five nations set to compete in the tournament, alongside Tahiti, New Zealand, Tonga, and the hosting nation – Solomon Islands.
NGL, representing Fiji at such a significant event is an honor that extends beyond personal achievement. The girls are not only playing for themselves and their families but also for the many women and girls in Fiji who aspire to take up the sport. Their journey to the OFC Futsal Women’s Nations Cup serves as an inspiration, proving that with passion and dedication, barriers can be broken, and new ground can be claimed in the world of sports. This momentous occasion is a testament to their hard work, perseverance, and the growing support for women in sports in Fiji and I love this for them!
The format of the competition is intense, with all five teams playing in a single group stage. The top two teams will advance to the final, while the third and fourth-placed sides will contest the playoff for third place. The stakes are high, as the winning team will not only take home the prestigious trophy but will also secure a spot in the first-ever FIFA Futsal Women’s World Cup, scheduled to be held in the Philippines in 2025.
For our Fiji Queens, this tournament is more than just a competition; it’s an opportunity to showcase their talent, determination, and the pride of their nation on an international platform.
As the team prepares to depart for the Solomon Islands in the coming days, I pray that the nation stands behind them, cheering them on with pride and excitement as they women in Football or Futsal don’t really get the exposure they deserve! The Fiji Futsal Queens have already made history by being the first women’s futsal team to represent Fiji at this level, and now they have the opportunity to further cement their legacy by bringing home the trophy and earning a spot in the FIFA Futsal Women’s World Cup.
Congratulations to the Fiji Futsal Kulas, and best of luck as you embark on this historic journey.
