For me, the word of the year 2023, would be “HAGAAANABOOOBOOOO!”.
A term used to say “yeap” or “io“, but in a more….spicier way….
The word of the year 2023, according to Merriam Webster is … “authentic”? Really? (No pun intended.)
When you think about it, it does make sense. The year was dominated by headlines about deepfakes, AI, fake news, and whatever the heck Elon Musk was up to next. Editor at large Peter Sokolowski said that while lookups for the word are routinely heavy on the dictionary’s website, they were boosted to new heights this year, because of a “kind of crisis of authenticity.” He pointed out that “What we realize is that when we question authenticity, we value it even more.”
Others considered for “word of the year” include Rizz, kibbutz, implode, coronation, deepfake, and Indict.
