At her hometown of Barranquilla, Colombia, where rumour has it that she started her signature hip-shaking dancing routines at the age of four on a table at a Lebanese restaurant, Shakira has been turned into a 21.3-foot (6.5-meter) bronze statue.
The Hips Don’t Lie singer posted images and a video of the monument on her Instagram account, showing her executing her signature hip swivel.
Although the monument is enormous, it may not be the biggest pop icon statue ever built. That honour seems to belong to Forever Marilyn, a 26-foot memorial to the movie star Marilyn Monroe that is now located outside the travel agency in Palm Springs, California. At the time of Monroe’s alleged initial “discovery” by an agent, Monroe was known as Norma Jean Baker.
Shakira expressed her gratitude to sculptor Yino Márquez and his pupils for their “enormous artistic talent” in making the gigantic bronze when it was presented.
