The Queen’s wake has begun and with it comes the age-old tradition where male members of the royal family stand by the casket so as to “guard” it.

The Queen’s children, King Charles, Princess Anne, and Prince Edward have taken up this royal task, along with the Royal Company of Archers, and with that, Princess Anne has made history by becoming the first female to be a part of a vigil of this importance.

The casket is thoroughly draped in the Royal Standard of Scotland with a floral wreath and the crown of Scotland sitting on top of it.

It’s currently sitting in the St. Giles Cathedral and the vigil by the Queen’s children will last 10 minutes.
