A family in India recently gained attention for organizing an elaborate burial ceremony for their old Suzuki Wagon R, attended by approximately 1,500 people. Instead of sending the 18-year-old car to a scrapyard, the Polara family from Padarshinga Village, Gujarat, gave it a unique farewell, considering it their “lucky” car. The patriarch, Sanjay Polara, explained that while he owns luxury vehicles like an Audi, he credits the humble Wagon R with helping his family achieve prosperity.

The family dug a 15-foot-deep burial pit on their property, where the car was ceremonially lowered using a slope. Decorated with flower petals, garlands, and a green cloth, the vehicle was honored with rituals accompanied by music from portable speakers. The entire ceremony reportedly cost over $4,500, and the family even constructed a samadhi (shrine) to commemorate the car.
“This car wasn’t just a vehicle; it symbolized our journey to success. We wanted to honor it in a way that future generations would remember,” said Sanjay. After the rituals, an excavator covered the car with dirt and clay, and Sanjay plans to plant a tree over the burial site as a lasting tribute to their cherished Wagon R.
