Paramount Pictures is developing an R-rated, live-action movie adaptation of *Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin*, based on the popular comic miniseries by IDW Publishing. This adaptation marks a major shift for the franchise, known for its family-friendly past, as it will be the first *TMNT* film to carry an R rating.
*The Last Ronin* story is set in a dystopian future where only one of the four turtles remains, seeking vengeance after the deaths of his brothers and Splinter at the hands of Oroku Hiroto, the grandson of their old enemy Shredder. The identity of the surviving turtle is kept a secret until revealed later in the series. The narrative unfolds in a bleak, totalitarian version of New York City controlled by Hiroto and his synthetic ninja army.
Tyler Burton Smith, known for his work on the *Child’s Play* reboot, will write the screenplay, while Walter Hamada, former head of DC Films and known for overseeing successful horror films, will produce. This dark and intense take is expected to contrast sharply with previous *TMNT* projects, appealing to older audiences and fans of the original comics’ gritty tone.
